BRUSSELS – “In this moment of challenges I am happy to announce that a team of doctors and nurses from Romania and another from Norway will be deployed in Italy”. This was stated by the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic. “Initially there was an inadequate response from some European countries to Italian requests, but things have changed now, Italy is not alone and Europe is in solidarity with Italy”, he added.

“The team of European doctors and nurses from Romania and Norway, mobilized through the EU civil protection mechanism, is immediately sent to Milan and Bergamo to help the Italian medical staff who work to combat coronavirus”, added Lenarcic. “Through the mechanism, Austria has also made more than 3,000 liters of disinfectant available to Italy. The Commission will coordinate and co-finance this European assistance”, he explained by thanking Romania, Norway and Austria for the aid to Italy in “such a difficult time for the whole continent. This is European solidarity in action”. Lenarcic then reported that “yesterday Italy also received a batch of personal protective equipment with the intervention of the EU Emergency Response Coordination Center and that several EU Member States also sent devices to Italy. of protection such as masks, suits and fans and they also transported Italian patients to their countries to treat them “.

These nurses and doctors, who have left their families to help colleagues in other Member States, represent the true face of European solidarity. All of Europe is proud of you. The Commission does everything possible to help Italy and all our Member States in this moment of great need, “said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen commenting on the sending to Italy of a team of doctors and nurses from Romania and Norway announced today by Commissioner Lenarcic.

Today and every day, I want to emphasize my admiration and support for all the medical staff and healthcare professionals on the front line in the fight against Covid-19, who are tirelessly working across Europe to save lives during this pandemic.
