Did Daniel Deriemacker kill his wife in Comines? This is the question to be answered by the jurors of the West Flanders Assize Court. The trial of the alleged murderer Carmen Garcia Ortega (35 years) opens this morning in Bruges.

On January 10, 2017, around 10 pm, the lifeless body of Carmen Garcia Ortega is found on rue du Commerce in Comines. The victim lies in a pool of blood right next to his BMW Z3 whose front tire is flat. Inside the cabin, no trace of the handbag and GSM of the young woman. Stolen. That night, Carmen Garcia Ortega was leaving her Spanish class. Nobody witnessed the facts.

Heard, husband Daniel Deriemacker denies any involvement. The investigation stalls. It is only 3 months later that a crucial testimony reaches the police. A passer-by said he was overtaken by a man in a hurry the night of the events. It gives a precise description of a Ford Fiesta. A model of the 90s with a faulty rear light finally found without plaque at the home of the suspect. The telephone analyzes also make it possible to locate the GSM of the husband of Carmen not far from the place of the crime. Despite his denials, Daniel Deriemacker is arrested.

One hundred witnesses summoned

It's a 2-week trial that starts this morning in Bruges. The case should have been tried in Mons but she was returned to the Assize Court of West Flanders because the accused wanted to be tried in his mother tongue. About 100 witnesses were summoned to the bar to try to make all the clarity on this story. Daniel Deriemacker faces life imprisonment.
