Federal Minister of Transport Marc Garneau and Aéroports de Montréal are to announce a $ 114 million investment this morning to develop freight transportation at Mirabel Airport.

This amount will initially be used for the construction of 50,000 square meter storage facilities at the Mirabel airport terminal, which has not received passengers since 2004, but remained in service for freight transportation.

Money will also be spent on repairing the airport road and expanding the airport deck to allow facilities to accommodate larger aircraft.

This significant investment in Mirabel's facilities, which currently host US transportation giants FedEx and UPS, among others, is aimed at making Mirabel's facilities more inviting and better suited to the needs of other airlines.

It is also hoped that the presence in Mirabel of the European manufacturer Airbus, which produces on the spot the equipment of the former C Series of Bombardier, could help the import and the export of parts. This would further boost freight transportation at Mirabel.

The news was very well received by the municipal authorities of Mirabel including Mayor Jean Bouchard who sees in the 114 million strong support for the development of facilities in his city in the field of aeronautics and air transport.

This is a new impetus […] It once again position Mirabel as a major pole in aeronautics.

Jean Bouchard, Mayor of Mirabel

It is a major industrial park of Greater Montreal now. We now find in Mirabel a dozen companies of international renown […] There are already up to 6000 jobs on the site itselfexplains the mayor.
