Julien Gauthier, 44, was killed by a grizzly bear on August 15 in a wilderness area of western Canada. The Frenchman was reportedly asleep while camping in Tulita, according to Parisian. Her friend, who was with him, is safe and sound.
Julien was a composer and soundman, he had made several long trips to make recordings in nature, including the semaphore of the island of Ouessant but also alongside scientists on mission to the Kerguelen Islands in Antarctica. In early August, he began a new canoe-kayak trip along the Mackenzie River in Canada, where he grew up.
A journey to create music
Before leaving, a call for crowdfunding had been launched to allow this trip. The goal was to record sounds in the wild and the trip was to last about 30 days, until September.
On August 7, Julien Gauthier published a last post on his Facebook page, a text that sounds like a sad omen after the drama: "Some news of our expedition (…) after already 5 days of canoeing and wild camping (including 3 without having crossed a living soul … except 4 bears, a lot of birds of all kinds, and a trace of wolf that appeared during the night 20 meters below the tent!) Tonight it's a good rest deserved ".
Despite the strong presence of bears in the region, these attacks remain extremely rare events.
