To contribute to the electoral debate, Press chose this year again to dissect the issues that interest you. Rather than taking a stand for one party or another, the editorial team will analyze in detail the three themes that you have chosen as a priority.
It is a difficult election campaign, which ends in a few days. A moving campaign with no main theme to guide the debate in one direction.
One day it was the climate. The next day, the deficits. Two days later, the blackface, the Quebec law on secularism or abortion (who would have thought?).
To help your thinking before D-Day, my team and I chose to use the preferred formula last year for the provincial election.
Rather than taking a stand for a party like we did in another era, we will search the platforms, review the leaders' statements, and review their key commitments. All in order to dissect the issues for you.
But beware ! Not just any issues: the ones you have chosen, the ones you have prioritized.
Over the past few days, we have probed you in this regard. * We asked you to write to us indicating which issue will determine your choice when you will be alone in the voting booth on October 21st.
Our objective was simple: to record your results in order to know the three main priorities which concern you, worry you, worry you.
The result ? It is both amazing … and the image of the election campaign.
Drum roll. At the forefront, we find … the environment. Far from all other issues, as was the case in 2018 during our probe for the provincial elections.
Readers spontaneously named themes related to the environment and mainly to the fight against climate change in a proportion of 49%. Many of you have said that for the first time ever, you seriously thought of making an electoral choice based on these issues. Many spoke of the importance of putting forward "a real green action plan" and "painful actions" to "curb the current deterioration of the planet".
In second place, surprise … identity receives no less than 22% of answers. You quoted the law 21 on secularism in very large numbers. Others mentioned "the defense of French", "respect for the Quebec nation" and "protection of provincial jurisdiction".
In third place, just behind, we find the economy, which was the choice of just over 14% of readers. As was the case last year. Deficits came back very often in your answers, but also GAFA taxation and socio-economic inequalities.
The other responses evoke, for the most part, women as issues as well as health.
These are the three themes that we will discuss in order over the next three days so that you have the most complete picture of party positions and their leaders.
For each issue, we will offer you a series of analyzes produced by the editorialists of Press, handpicked experts and readers, all accompanied of course the caustic look of our cartoonist Serge Chapleau.
For my part, I will rely on the editorial principles of Press, as issued during the assignment of the newspaper to a social utility trust, to analyze the programs of the various parties on the three themes that you consider crucial. These principles, let us specify, are the values that guide the editorial team on a daily basis.
More than ever, Press wants to listen to you More than ever with this original and in-depth look at the current election campaign, Press intends to animate the public debate.
Good end of the electoral campaign!
* Methodology
We published three calls to all on October 3, 8 and 9 in the Debates section. We did not specify for what purpose or that the answers would be counted, in order to avoid the infiltration of the answers by organized mass mailings. No choice of answer was given. These were calls to all as we do regularly, formulated as follows: "What stake of this election campaign will determine your choice on October 21? ". This is not a scientific survey, but a probe.
