The raid was the first in 11 days, since Washington and the Taliban had agreed on a week of “violence reduction” to pave the way for an American withdrawal before the deal in Qatar. But the problems started already last Sunday. The Doha agreement, in addition to withdrawing all NATO forces within 14 months, also provided for the release of five thousand Taliban prisoners by the Kabul government. However, President Ashraf Ghani refused to do so, because Islamist guerrillas did not make any commitments on respecting the truce against government troops. Bearded students then announced on Monday that “operations” were resuming as usual. On Tuesday, five policemen were killed at a checkpoint near a copper mine. Yesterday there were clashes “in nine provinces”, including that of Helmand, where the Americans conducted the response raid, with a total of twenty dead, including 4 civilians.
A war report that does not promise anything good. In reality, Ghani is not at all convinced of the agreement between the US and the Taliban. Their chief mediator, Abdul Ghani Baradar, former Mulah Omar’s right-hand man, has pledged with Donald Trump to respect the pacts, to break ties with Al-Qaeda, and to fight ISIS cells in the country. But the leadership has never renounced the establishment of an Islamic emirate, such as the one founded in 1996 and destroyed by American intervention in 2001. Ghani is convinced that as soon as NATO forces are gone, the assault on Kabul will begin. The same scenario that followed the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, with Mullah Omar who eventually conquered the capital in 1996 and hanged former President Mohammad Najibullah.
