In the midst of the production stop caused by the Coronavirus emergency, Netflix has acquired the production rights of Dragon’s Lair, the 1983 arcade video game released by Cinematronics and based on the animations of Don Bluth.Roy Lee (IT, Doctor Sleep) will produce the film through its Vertigo Entertainment with Trevor Engelson (snowfall) of Underground Films. Together with them, Don Bluth, Gary Oldman and Jon Pomeroy will also be among the producers, and above all Ryan Reynolds with his Maximum Effort.

Reynolds is closing the negotiations with Netflix to appear as the protagonist of the film, which will be written by Dan and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark).

The plot of the video game is decidedly epic: a knight named Dirk the Ardito must save the beautiful princess Daphne, held captive in a crystal ball by the cruel dragon Singe who hides in a haunted castle. In each room of the castle you will find tests to overcome and monsters to defeat created by a dark wizard. Dragon’s Lair was popular enough to revolutionize the arcade video game industry and launch LaserDisc technology, as well as the career of Don Bluth, who had just directed Brisby and the secret of the Nimh.
