“What you forget will never be found”: so IFC Midnight presents The Wretched, the perfect movie for a horror viewing during quarantine. To direct it are the brothers Brett is Drew T. Pierce, their second feature after the debut Deadheads, a zombie comedy made in 2011.
The trailer, which you can see at the beginning of this article, suggests the elements on which the two have focused: the terrifying folk tales of witchcraft folklore, macabre effects and frightening designs, few jump scares and a lot of suspense, tension and chain twists .
The Wretched tells the story of Ben (John-Paul Howard), a 17-year-old boy who is facing the separation of his parents with great difficulty.
His father asks him to spend the summer with him and Ben accepts: he finds himself in a placid and quiet town in Michigan, where his father finds him a job at the port in the area to impart a little responsibility and sense of discipline.

Provincial life does not offer Ben much leisure, on the contrary: he is forced to socialize with the reserved peers of the place and his father’s new partner.
When a family rents the house next to them, Ben quickly realizes that the strange roommates are dealing with something horrible: an evil spirit of the woods has taken over the villa and has “entered” into the mother’s body.

Too bad that Ben is the only one to notice the possession and nobody seems to believe him: at that point he has to make up for himself to prevent all the children of the country from being plundered.
What is the secret behind this curse? And what does that symbol that occurs everywhere, from the trunks of trees to the walls of the house mean?
In the cast, in addition to Howard (previously seen in Hell or High Water), Zarah Mahler (Beyond Skyline), Piper Curda (It wasn’t me), Azie Tesfai (Supergirl), Kevin Bigley (Upload) and Jamison Jones (Hollywood Homicide) stand out.
The Wretched has toured the most important festivals dedicated to the genre: the Fantasia of Montreal, the FrightFest of London, the Toronto After Dark, the Austin FF and the Molins Festival de Cine de Terror.
The critics’ reactions were enthusiastic: on “Tomatometer” by Rotten Tomatoes the film reaches a flattering 92%.
Dennis Harvey of Variety he wrote that “this brilliant and well-made nightmare will delight most fans of the genre and shows that the two directors are ready for a major”. Meagan Navarro on Bloody Disgusting is of the same opinion: “The Pierce brothers give us a dark fairy tale that the midnight public will certainly appreciate”.

Canceled the theatrical release, The Wretched will be available in VOD and on the digital platforms iTunes and Amazon Prime fromMay 1, 2020.
