Vaud: Even better detection of blood doping – Switzerland

The new method of detection of blood doping, developed by the Swiss Laboratory is simple to implement and inexpensive. This could have implications beyond the world of sport.

Used by some athletes to increase their performance, blood doping (or doping with EPO) involves increasing the number of red blood cells that carry oxygen in the muscles.

For the past ten years, the control of this type of doping is done via a biological passport, which allows to identify suspicious level changes in certain blood parameters of athletes, said Wednesday the Lausanne CHUV in a statement.

The current analysis process, however, involves complex, expensive and constraining logistics. Its principle is to detect, for example, the abnormal presence of reticulocytes, that is, nascent red blood cells.

After blood sampling by specialized personnel, the sample is transported by vehicle under specific technical conditions to ensure sample validity. Finally, the time required to validly perform laboratory tests is very short.

Added to all this is the fact that, in the face of controls, doping athletes have adapted themselves using microdoses of EPO, or barely detectable microtransfusions.

A drop of blood is enough

Under the supervision of Dr. Nicolas Leuenberger, a LAD team, attached to the University Center for Forensic Medicine, conducted research on an RNA molecule found only in nascent red blood cells.

The method developed in Lausanne requires only a drop of blood collected at the end of the finger, dried on blotting paper. The sampling, which can also be done on the shoulder, does not need to be done by specialized personnel. The sample can then be sent by simple mailing to the laboratory, where the analysis takes only a few hours.

If this method is approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), it could make possible a much more regular athlete follow-up. Its effectiveness should also make it possible to detect blood dopings that are currently invisible.

Beyond sport

It also opens the possibility of performing retrospective analyzes on samples collected in the past, and thus to detect doping that would have escaped the controls, according to this work published in the American journal Clinical Chemistry.

But beyond the world of sport, this discovery could have implications in the medical world, said Dr. Leuenberger, quoted in the statement: "In the long run, blood tests should indeed become much easier to practice.
