UEFA has announced the opening of a disciplinary procedure against Bulgaria in the aftermath of the match against England marked by cries of monkey and Nazi signs addressed by Bulgarian supporters to black English players.

The European body has also opened a disciplinary investigation against Turkey following military salutes by Turkish players in matches against Albania and France.

UEFA's Disciplinary Committee opened a procedure for "racist behavior", due to "Nazi songs and greetings", sent by the Bulgarian public during the Euro 2020 qualifier win 6-0 on Monday night in Sofia by England, said UEFA. The procedure also concerns "the throwing of objects, disturbances during the national anthem and the broadcast of slow motion on a giant screen," says UEFA.

England is targeted for "disruption of the Bulgarian national anthem" by its supporters and the "insufficient" number of agents supervising its supporters.

Interrupted match

A fringe of the public present in Sofia during the victory of England (6-0), in qualifying match at Euro 2020, verbally attacked the black players of the English team. Twice, the match had to be interrupted. London asked UEFA on Tuesday for "tough punishments" and "get rid of racism once and for all" at the stadiums.

In a statement, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin of Slovenia warned that his case could not end the scourge alone. He called on the "football family" to "work with governments and NGOs to declare war on racists", assuring that the body is already applying "some of the toughest" sanctions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described racism as "a heinous evil that seems to be worsening in some parts of the world, and the perpetrators should be banned for life from the stadiums." It should be noted that on Tuesday too, the President of the Bulgarian Federation announced his resignation.

Turkish military salute

UEFA also announced on the same day the opening of a disciplinary investigation against Turkey and a potential "political provocation" following the military salutes made by its players against Albania and France.

An inspector has been appointed by UEFA to start a "disciplinary investigation" in connection with a "potential political provocation" behavior, following the military salutes made by the Turkish players during the matches against the Albania on Friday (1-0) and France (1-1) on Monday, qualifiers for Euro-2020, said the body.
