After all the leaks organized by Google (or not), the Mountain View firm has finally formalize in New York its two new smartphones, the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL which succeed the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
The first thing we notice is obviously the new design of Pixel 4 with no longer a two-tone back but with a glossy finish, to the delight of our fingerprints. The photo block has also been revised and adopts a square design like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro last year and the iPhone 11 Pro last September. However, even if it is square, the photo block does not include an ultra wide-angle camera and is therefore limited to a wide angle and a telephoto 3x.
On the side of the screen, exit the notch as on the Pixel 3 XL, it is entitled to a full screen as on the Pixel 3. But do not pack too fast, it will be understood, if the side edges are relatively thin, the edges at the top and bottom of the screen really take what the proposed pixel 3. In the presence of the presence of the front camera a 3D facial recognition system as on the iPhone 11/11 Pro. But that's not all, we also find a sensor gesture recognition and movement. This technology, called Motion Sense, can detect the grip of the smartphone but also gestures to control the smartphone. We could summarize this to a Kinect but in a smartphone.
To return to the screen, there is of course a Flexible OLED slab of 5.7 inches with a Full HD + definition for the Pixel 4 and 6.3 inches with a definition Quad HD + for the Pixel 4 XL. As expected by the rumors, the rate of refresh of the screens is 90Hz but that's not all, it adapts to the temperature of ambient colors, a little like the technology True Tone of Apple but we also welcome the technology Dynamic Display that switches to 60Hz when the Pixel 4 does not detect the need to be in 90Hz. The direct consequence of allowing a better autonomy.
Inside, we find a SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, 64GB or 128GB of internal memory, 6GB of RAM, a processor dedicated to AI, the Pixel Neural Core, and a battery of 2800mAh for the Pixel 4 and 3700mAh for the Pixel 4 XL and of course, Android 10. Google Assistant has been completely reviewed and if this new version will not be available for us French yet, we could discover it and it is now super fast with the context management but also applications. With this new Google Assistant, we also discover the new application, Audio Recorder, which can transcribe the voice in real time. Simply impressive.
And finally the photo with not three cameras but two cameras only. Indeed, unlike all its competitors, the Pixel 4 does not offer ultra wide-angle camera. The reason ? According to Google, this is not especially a demand from users of previous Pixel users. We do not necessarily agree on the subject. For the main camera, there is a 12.2 megapixel sensor with a lens aperture at F / 1.7 and a 3x telephoto camera with a 16 megapixel sensor and a F / 2.4 lens aperture. Unlike competitors, too, the photo application does not offer a zoom level and is a continuous zoom between x1 and x8. Of course, Google has improved its algorithms to improve its IA-assisted image engine, so we now have an improved HDR engine with Dual Exposure technology that allows to see in real time the result of shooting, a better portrait mode and the contribution of the second camera is not negligible, an AstroPhotography mode, from the Night Vision mode, for astonomy photos and for once, it's quite impressive.
Count from 769 euros for the Pixel 4 and 899 euros for the Pixel 4 XL. They will be available from October 24, 2019 on the Google site but also in store at more traditional distributors.
