Federal and local police are organizing a new speed marathon. Controls in this area will be conducted intensively throughout the country for 24 hours, from this Tuesday 06:00.

This marathon is part of the campaign "Control CruiserFlemish Training Center for Traffic and Mobility (Vlaamse Stichting Verkeerskunde – VSV) to support the vast majority of drivers who find it important to respect speed limits.Control Cruiser"is an exemplary user who nowhere exceeds the maximum speed limit.

This is the 12th federal and local police speed marathon. Intensive checks will be carried out again on the entire territory.

Christophe Brück, French-speaking spokesperson for the Federal Police, who first explains the purpose of such an operation: "The purpose of this operation is really to make users aware of driving at a speed that is excessive or inappropriate. It should be realized that despite the many prevention campaigns and control campaigns, too many users are still driving at a speed that is not at all appropriate and that this is one of the main factors of accidents and deaths on our roads. That's why we really want to work in these 24 hours on user behavior".

What is called a speed that is not suitable?

Christophe Brück states: "It is clear that the authorized legal speeds already constitute a norm to be respected, but this speed can nevertheless still be higher than the speed that the user should adopt, taking into account for example the meteorological circumstances, taking into account the circumstances of traffic. or simply if one had to for example in autumn period roll on roads, roads that are fat or on which there are leaves for example".

How did you select these different places?

For Christophe Brück: "These places were selected on the basis of various criteria. For some control areas there is a real aspect related to the dangerousness of the place, but it can also be to any other place without any particular reason, so that the users say that at any time and in any place they can be subject to a speed control. We really want to work on their behavior so that they adopt good reflexes that they will keep throughout the year".

And social networks?

"We know that users are very quick to report checkpoints or control teams. On this subject, it should be noted that there will obviously be controls using fixed speed cameras, but also using mobile speed cameras. It is clear that we will adapt to move our control places regularly, so that once a place of control indicated by social networks, the time users arrive on the spot, they realize that control team has already moved to another location"completes Christophe Brück.

In its 11th edition, which took place at the beginning of April, the Federal Highway Police and 132 local police zones measured the speed of more than one million vehicles, of which 29,450, or 2, 71%, drove too fast. Sixty-five drivers had their driving licenses withdrawn.
