The Chevrolet Sail finishes its production in Colombia

GM Colmotores Colmotores will stop producing the popular subcompact sedan this year. With the decision they hope to concentrate on the commercialization of models such as Beat, Spark and Onix.

This afternoon it was confirmed that the popular Chevrolet Sail will stop occurring at the plant Colmotores in Bogotá. The second generation of this vehicle had been produced in the country since 2012, when it was presented in sedan and hatchback versions to take the place of the successful Aveo.

Launched for the economic vehicle segment, the Sail he managed to commercialize during his seven years in the country more than 105,000 units, of them 2,600 enrolled this year.

However, despite remaining as the car number 15 among the best sellers in the country, its sales had been reduced in a 46.9% over the same period last year.

Of love and hate

There was much talk during these years about the equipment of Chevrolet Sail, which even had a ".co" version with a 89% of Colombian parts, cloth upholstery and even an exclusive logo for the country, plus a cab and one Sport hatchback That can still be found.

The truth is that in recent times, this sedan had been marketed in four versions, all with 1.4L 16 valve engine and 102 horsepower, with slight differences in comfort components. With this equipment he achieved a consumption of up to 60 km / gallon.

Although the most recent models already had two airbags, ABS brakes and standard brake distributor, the Sail obtained controversial results in Latin NCAP, to be valued at the time with zero stars in the first versions without airbags.

And now?

While the exact reasons why this decision was reached are unknown, it follows that the Chevrolet Sail leaves production due to a change in focus by the plant to focus on the commercialization of other vehicles such as Spark, Beat and Onix.

In addition, it seems that despite being discontinued, the plant GM Colmotores will continue to produce parts for replacement.

It is worth remembering that the third generation of the Sail is produced and rolls in Ecuador since 2017, as in Mexico, where it is sold under the name of Aveo. However, the arrival of this model in Colombia still uncertain.

Prices to date

At the time of knowing the end of its production, the Chevrolet Sail remains in the showcases of the brand throughout the country, with prices that oscillate between $ 31’990,000 and $ 39’590,000, valid as of September 2019.
