In appearance, the Cecil hotel resembles all other Los Angeles establishments. Imposing entrance hall, marble floor, stained glass windows, subdued lighting, stone walls … In this 600-room Beaux Arts-style hotel, everything is there to put the guests at ease. Built in 1924, The Cecil was meant to cater to businessmen and the Hollywood elite.

But destiny decided otherwise. Since its opening, the establishment has been linked to many gruesome events. There are at least 16 murders, suicides and paranormal events that took place at the hotel. Cecil has even served as a temporary home for some of the most famous serial killers in the United States. The establishment has inspired episodes of "American Horror Story" and attracted the attention of the media who have spent the events under the microscope.

Mournful incidents

During its first decade of operation, the hotel counts at least six suicides within its walls. The following decades saw several more violent deaths. In September 1944, a woman who was staying at the Cecil woke up in the middle of the night with horrible stomach pains. Not to disturb her companion, she went to the bathroom, where she gave birth to a boy. A shock because she did not know she was pregnant.

Thinking that the newborn was dead, the 19-year-old threw him out the window. At her trial, she was found not guilty of murder because of insanity, then admitted to hospital for psychiatric treatment. Less than 20 years later, another tragedy occurred at the hotel. A passer-by who was walking quietly in front of the establishment was crushed by a woman who had just jumped from the ninth floor after an argument with her ex-husband. The fall was fatal to both people.

HQ of serial killers

According to US media reports, the Cecil hotel reportedly hosted some of the most famous killers in American history. In the mid-1980s, Richard Ramirez, aka the "stalker or stalker at night," committed a series of rapes and murders in Los Angeles between 1984 and 1985. He had taken up residence in a room on the top floor of the hotel during a good part of his horrible slaughter. In 1991, the Austrian Jack Unterweger, accused of 11 homicides, resided in the hotel.

The death of Elisa Lam is one of the most recent tragedies in the hotel. The Canadian student stayed at Cecil in 2013. A few weeks later, her body was found in the water tank of the hotel. Currently, the Cecil is undergoing renovations to transform some of its rooms into residential apartments.
