Middle East: "US foreign policy has failed miserably"

US military destroys own ammunition in Syria

The last time American troops had destroyed their own ammunition was during their flight from Vietnam, Sputnik told political economy professor Alexander Azadgan, an American geopolitical analyst at United World International's analysis center.

"The last time such extreme measures were adopted was when the United States was fleeing Vietnam. And we all remember the image of helicopters thrown or expelled from the US aircraft carrier. He recalls that this comes after Donald Trump declared on October 6 that the United States was withdrawing its troops from northern Syria, an information he confirmed this week. Azadgan, however, believes there will be no total US withdrawal from Syria despite statements by the US President. Certain units of the special forces should remain in this country.

"I think that there will be an American presence east of the Euphrates, which is very controversial, even if the Americans say they will not support the Kurds. US troops have simply withdrawn to other parts of the Middle East, but this area is so strategic that the United States would like to have some sort of secret presence. Indeed, you do not need thousands of soldiers when you have members of the special forces. They could be very few, but they are extremely effective, "said the analyst.

Tensions continue to mount after Turkey's launch of Operation Source of Peace in northeastern Syria, with the declared goal of fighting terrorists, to create a security zone along its border with Syria and to resettle refugees in their country of origin.

Is Daesh * defeated?

Turkey has claimed that it only fights the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which it regards as an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an organization described as a terrorist by Ankara, as well as remnants of Daech *.
Turkey's offensive provoked strong criticism in the United States and Europe. Washington imposed sanctions against Ankara. Paris and Berlin have announced that they have suspended their arms deliveries to Turkey following its operation. The Syrian authorities furthermore consider this act an aggression.

Abandoned by Americans, Kurds turn to Damascus

The United States forced Turkey to declare an immediate ceasefire, with US Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday in Ankara urging Erdogan to end his operations in northern Syria.

Ankara says its operation is intended only to create a buffer zone on the Turkish-Syrian border and to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees living in Turkey.
