Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu will collide this Saturday in a season loaded with condiments at the US Open.

The former No. 1 in the world will go once again on the elusive 24th Major, to match Margaret Court as the most winning player in history.

Since the conquest of Australia 2017, Serena played three other Grand Slam finals, but Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep deprived her of the record.

Indeed, since that shout in Melbourne (after which he left the activity for a year for maternity) the American did not return to achieve a title in the circuit.

In New York, then, Serena will have a multiple rematch, which inevitably must add the scandal of the 2018 final against Osaka, where the tense controversy with the umpire Carlos Ramos ended up taking over all the headlines.

On the other hand, Andreescu arrives with the impulse of a simply unlikely 2019: in January it was 152 of the world, with less than 10 matches at the WTA level; today champion of Indian Wells and Toronto stands, finalist in which it is just his fourth Grand Slam event (to illustrate the feat: Serena needed five) and already with a guaranteed debut in the Top 10.

All with one detail: between March and August only played a tournament (Roland Garros), for recurring problems in one shoulder. Recovered on the North American tour, the 19-year-old Canadian again devastated, has been winning 13 consecutive times and is 23-1 from the Indian Wells consecration. The only defeat? An injury withdrawal …

It will undoubtedly be the first of many finals for Andreescu in this type of scenario. And in comparison with Serena a surreal statistic appears: when the American won her first Grand Slam (US Open 1999), the Canadian was not yet born …

Two decades later, record or changing of the guard?
