Although the water comes from sealed jugs, the airlines deposit it in a tank which is used for kitchen faucets (with which they often prepare tea, coffee and ice), for bathrooms and many use that water to give it to the passengers to drink.
The drinking water rule for aircraft (ADWR), established by EPA, requires airlines to clean tanks constantly and disinfect at least four times a year.
The study 2019 Airline Water analyzed the water to drink from major american airlines and classified, according to the number of violations of EPA standards, positive reports of E. coli in samples and the willingness of the airline to answer questions about water quality.
"Each airline received a water health score, with 5 being the highest rating and 1 the lowest," they note.
