The France Tobacco factory in Sarlat, Dordogne – the last to realize the first transformation of the
in France – will close at the end of October, leaving 33 employees on the floor, according to
France 3 New Aquitaine. This factory, which belongs to seven cooperatives, produced tobacco for tobacco companies.

The premature termination of the contract with the German group Pyxus International marks the end of this emblematic activity of the South West, already weakened by several social plans in recent years. In the 1980s, the plant employed up to 200 people.

The 176 tobacco producers in the Dordogne, who produce about a thousand tons a year, will have to find export markets for their production. For this year, a party will probably go to Italy and Croatia.
