An Israeli raid hit a house in the east of Gaza City, killing a 14-month-old girl and her pregnant mother in an Israeli escalation that included intensive air strikes in response to rocket fire at settlements adjacent to the Strip.

"She killed the child Saba Mahmoud Abu Arar, who is one and two months old and her mother was seriously wounded, a pregnant woman, and her second child was moderately injured by the Israeli targeting of their home in eastern Gaza," ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

A press source said that the mother of the girl died of her injuries, bringing the number of civilian deaths to three and 12 injured, as a result of the Israeli escalation since Saturday morning.

"We were eating lunch when the house was bombed by an Israeli reconnaissance plane, killing Saba immediately and seriously wounding her mother and her sister," a source from the family told AFP while escorted to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

"I do not know why they bombed the house," he said.

Dozens of rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip on Saturday towards Israel, which responded with air strikes and artillery shelling in a new escalation that threatens the fragile truce between Hamas and Israel.
