The news is made public Carlo De Benedetti who in an interview with Il Foglio admitted: “I’m seriously thinking about it. And I’m getting encouraging messages”. The new newspaper will have all the signatures of Repubblica but will no longer be called Repubblica.
The engineer explained what are the reasons behind this courageous choice: “I think that John Elkann want to change the nature of the Republic. They take it further to the right. I believe that a substantial distortion of the cultural trend that was at the origin of the newspaper founded by Eugenio Scalfari. That ‘certain idea of Italy’ that Repubblica has interpreted with great dignity for the past forty-five years. This is why I think there are good cultural, political and even a great editorial space for a new newspaper. “
That of De Benedetti, albeit with a hint of melancholy for the history of the Republic, seems almost a blessing. It is not yet clear on which right-wing positions this new style Republic will stand. But there is more. The same engineer, in fact, focused on the Italian political framework declaring that Italy has become “an invertebrate country. In disarray. In danger. The government does not exist, the parties do not exist, the institutions are liquefied, the central State argues with the Regions … and if the strong man arrived, the Italians would take him, as he has written Stefano Folli the other day”.
But De Benedetti does not want to surrender to this perspective. Just in consideration of what he considers to be a “heeled context, the latest blow would be the fall of the Republic. That is, of the liberal democratic press !. Therefore, he concluded, “I don’t think it’s allowed.”
If this may be an idea for the future, there is a move in the present that has displaced many. In recent days, the streets of Repubblica and have suddenly split Carlo Verdelli. On Thursday, the now former director of the newspaper founded by Eugenio Scalfari communicated to the CDR that he had learned this morning that the property had decided to terminate the relationship.
The board of the Gruppo Editoriale Gedi has appointed Maurizio Molinari Repubblica director to replace Carlo Verdelli. The communication took place with a note from the company released at the end of the Board which met following the completion of Exor’s sale of the Cir shares. The board of directors expressed to Verdelli “gratitude for the work done over the past year and full solidarity for the intimidation that has been directed against him”.
