Thanks to a rule of Universal Postal Union designed to facilitate emerging economies, including China, many Chinese sellers manage to send small parcels completely free of charge. This does not seem to appeal to some countries, including the United States that have threatened to leave the union.
This could have been the cause of the change approved by the UPU these days, which will allow a significant increase compared to current rates. It must be said that a limit has been imposed, given that the new costs cannot exceed 70% national tariffs and that the increases will have to be introduced gradually.
European retailers rejoice, for whom free shipping from China has always been a thorn in the side and an evident competitive advantage. It is therefore likely that in the coming weeks we will see a gradual one increase in shipping costs by the Chinese online stores, which have already had to deal with the recent increases by DHL.
Some Chinese stores have already started to introduce a shipping cost, which currently does not exceed two euros on the cheapest products, with other shipping methods tracked for the more expensive products. Will increases be enough to discourage purchases from China or will users start to make a common front by accumulating orders to share shipping costs?
