Unemployment falls in December in Eurozone

The European Statistical Office (Eurostat) released the December unemployment data of the European Union (EU) and the Euro Area. Accordingly, seasonally adjusted unemployment, which was 7.5 percent in November in the 19-member Eurozone, dropped to 7.4 percent in December.

Unemployment in the EU, which was 6.3 percent in November, fell to 6.2 in December. While the number of unemployed in the EU was 15 million 475 thousand in December, 12 million 251 thousand of it was in the Euro Zone. As of December, the lowest unemployment in the EU was measured in Czech Republic with 2 percent. Czech Republic was followed by Germany and the Netherlands with 3.2 percent.

The highest unemployment was recorded in Greece with 16.6 percent and Spain with 13.7 percent. The number of youth unemployed under the age of 25 has been determined as 3 million 155 thousand in the EU and 2 million 213 thousand in the Euro Area. Thus, the youth unemployment rate was measured as 14.1 percent in the EU and 15.3 percent in the Euro Area.
