On Monday the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, presented himself to both the House and the Senate to account for the reform of the European Stability Mechanism, the MES, a European institution that aims to help countries in economic difficulty. The MES has been at the center of the political debate in Italy for a couple of weeks, above all because of the controversy opened by Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, despite the process of reform had begun and had been approved while he was in government: in essence, the MES has been accused by the opposition of being a European bureaucratic mechanism that will limit the freedom of action of the government.

Monday League and Brothers of Italy have openly criticized Conte accusing him of "high treason". In the Senate the League's parliamentarians showed signs and small Pinocchios to accuse Conte and the government of having lied and of having secretly conducted negotiations on the reform of the MES. Conte responded to all the accusations, retracing the steps of the measure, recalling all the times when the Parliament was made aware of the reform and pointing out that none of the League's ministers, when in government, had raised objections on the point.
