I didn't even consider it the Sony machine. And I was wrong, of course, especially in light of everything that came after us. But at the time, the newcomer didn't really attract me a bit. I try to explain why.

In that first half of the 90s I was a mature gamer. Still young at age, little more than an adult, but now with a dozen years behind as a fan of digital entertainment. I had already tried several platforms, from the consoles with the Pong clones in my cousins' Atari VCS 2600, the Commodore 64, the first computer and the first gaming machine to enter my house, up to PCs with Doom and Syndicate, via the Amiga and Nintendo and SEGA consoles, which I used at my friends' house.

PlayStation

If I have to tell you more precisely, in that December of 1994 I was a proud PCista. But I liked the consoles, eh. In fact, I envied them to my friends and took advantage of any possible moment to invade their homes and have fun with them. And with "them" I no longer refer to my friends, but to Mega Drive and SNES. I knew and appreciated Nintendo and SEGA from the time of NES and Master System and I had no doubt in considering the two Japanese companies as the only ones capable of representing the best of the console world.

The arrival of Sony with its PlayStation, on the contrary, seemed to me something completely out of place. The interest of a large company in this world of video games that was beginning to grow, but which – in my opinion – was not accompanied by the right knowledge of the sector, the right know-how, the right experience in the field. It makes me laugh too much thinking about it now, but it was so. I used to join Sony's PlayStation to the attempts that had been made in those same years by the 3DO consortium with its universal console or Philips with the CD-i. Well yes. In my eyes, PlayStation was "that stuff there". In my opinion, it didn't have much to do with video games. What a nod, my mother.

PlayStation

From a certain point of view, however, and in a totally involuntary way, I was right. In a sense, PlayStation didn't have much to do with video games. At least as they were seen until December 3, 1994. The Sony console, in fact, has had such a powerful impact, with the world of video games, that it has completely changed. In fact, since the mid-90s, those "toys for children and for nerds" have become the favorite pastime of a flood of people that they didn't even consider them before.

Young people, adults, students, workers, nerds, tamaris, singles, engaged couples, families, parents, children. People. Of any kind. Everyone knew about the PlayStation. Which, at that time, for many of these people amounted to saying "video games". And for some it is still so today. Yes, because PlayStation, the thing that I think "with video games has nothing to do with it", has quickly become synonymous.

PlayStation

I don't need to apologize to you today, dear PlayStation, because I did it already at the time, a few years after your arrival, when I finally realized that there was nothing else to do but join my gaming PC, to then even elect my favorite platform, because you were too much more capable of entertaining me and my friends together, in addition to making me passionate about a lot of games that there were on PC. And in addition to marvelously marrying my ever growing taste for "videogame comfort".

Then, okay, 'I wrote like 92 consecutive editorials for what was perhaps the monthly magazine most loved by the owners of PlayStation, or PSM, so I figured if we had not already been abundantly clarified. And now what to say? You are always in better shape. But neither do I feel bad, come on. I have an idea that we will have fun again for a while.
