Valbona Sako was the mayor of Durres for only four months. His first months in the office were tarnished by the violent earthquake which caused November 26th 51 victims in Albania, 26 in the town of Durazzo, the most affected. In an interview with Albanian TV, the mayor commented on the earthquake, especially the death toll. His words have raised a media fuss and a shower of criticism, which forced the mayor to resignation.

"We should be happy to have had only 50 deaths ": here is theunhappy exit of the former first citizen of Durres. He then added: "In other similar cases there have been over a thousand victims". It is probable that his words were misinterpreted, but surely the mayor could have spared himself such an output, which was not very respectful of the victims' relatives. In this sense, the resignation was one due act.
