The Swedish activist opened a meeting organized by Fridays for Future within the framework of the UN World Climate Conference in Madrid
"We have a duty to use media attention for our platform and for make our voice heard – added the 16-year-old, before giving the floor to the moderator Luisa Neubauer and other activists present. – We, Luisa and I, are privileged because our stories have already been said, but it is not our stories that must be heard but those of others, especially from the South of the world and from indigenous communities. We have created this event as a sort of platform to share the stories that need to be known ".
The first to speak after Greta, who also recalled the importance of "listening to the stories of indigenous peoples, who are at the forefront of suffering the effects of climate change", was a boy coming from the Marshall Islands, struggling with rising waters. "We were told that to resist we must adapt, go higher – he said – or we must emigrate".
To intervene, among others, was also a Russian activist, who recalled how activists who participated in climate protests were arrested in their own country. Speakers also a native american girl, which witnessed the ongoing struggles against the exploitation of the territories against the will of the natives.
The final message to all politicians is the request to have more visibility. "We ask to be heard, because no one more than us experiences the damage from climate change on their own skin," stressed an activist from Uganda.
