Government sources in Mauritania, a state in West Africa, said a boat carrying at least 150 migrants sank on December 4 in the Atlantic Ocean. At least 57 people died. The news was confirmed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an agency linked to the United Nations that deals with migrants. Some survivors told IOM that the boat, bound for the Canary Islands, had left the Gambia.
Mauritanian authorities say up to 57 people are dead after a vessel carrying migrants sank off its coast today. Survivors told IOM staff the vessel left The Gambia last Weds. with at least 150 people aboard. Help is being provided to 83 survivors by the government, IOM & UNHCR.
