Government sources in Mauritania, a state in West Africa, said a boat carrying at least 150 migrants sank on December 4 in the Atlantic Ocean. At least 57 people died. The news was confirmed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an agency linked to the United Nations that deals with migrants. Some survivors told IOM that the boat, bound for the Canary Islands, had left the Gambia.
