Arrived in 2016, the Toyota C-HR Hybrid has brought a breath of fresh air, with its elaborate and bold shapes that wink at both SUVs and coupes. Now, it's time for a very light refreshed aesthetic: keeping the characteristic sport crossover shape, with a short snout, high sides and an almost horizontal rear window, now there are the LED headlights with the redesigned daytime running lights, an original mask and fake vertical air intakes on the sides of the bumper, with round fog lights. Behind, we see the redesigned fascia at the bottom. But the real novelty is the debut of a 2.0 hybrid version with 179 hp (the one we drove), which joins the 122 hp 1.8 already in production. For both, the mechanics are the same as the Corolla sedan.
Improves infotainment
In the cockpit of the renovated Toyota C-HR Hybrid some more refined finishes and finishes change. But, above all, there is a new multimedia system, now equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (previously not provided), to manage some smartphone applications via the 8 "touch screen. Furthermore, using the MyT app, it is possible to see from the mobile phone where the car was parked, plan a route and enter it in the navigation system or check the status of the car by checking various parameters. The Hybrid Coach function then allows you to get an overview of the journey made with the details of how the car works in electric, fuel consumption, and suggestions for improving your driving style. Among the options, the Data Communication Module (DCM) system is available, an on-board connectivity service that also supports the e-call function, to obtain immediate help from the operations center in the event of an emergency. And finally the navigator, standard for the Premiere, allows constant updating of the maps without going to a dealership and without downloading to external devices. The new cartography can be downloaded via an internet connection, from the smartphone or directly through the on-board connection module.
There Toyota C-HR Hybrid Premiere has a JBL hi-fi system with an 800 Watt amplifier, eight channels and nine speakers (with two tweeters in the front pillars, two 17 cm subwoofers in the front and a 19 cm subwoofer in the trunk). Sounds good. The seats are wraparound, without being uncomfortable, and the driving position is correct, with height adjustment also on the passenger side, and with electric adjustment (in combination with the leather interior, standard for the Premiere, or in leather and Alcantara). Small, as in the old C-HR, the rear windows (which take away brightness and visibility) and the trunk is not very large, which in this 2.0 version is reduced from 377 to 358 liters.
A convincing hybrid system
The 2.0 petrol 152 bhp is combined with two electric motors: one that acts as a starter motor and one with a 109 bhp and 202 Nm of maximum torque, which acts as a generator during regenerative braking and functions as an electric unit while driving . The C-HR 2.0 has a combined power of 184 hp and, for the home, can sail in electric mode up to 120 km / h. On the march, the hybrid system guarantees a smooth ride and a certain sparkle, and the 2.0 doesn't make too much noise (except in full acceleration, when it goes up a lot of turns before the CVT transmission lengthens the ratio). Also the comfort is appreciable, thanks to the effective calibration of the suspensions and the ready steering: characteristics that make this crossover precise and intuitive to drive. Extremely agile in the city, this crossover starts in electric mode, and then switches to the heat engine when more power is required. Selecting the EV program the car moves at zero emissions for a couple of kilometers (starting with the charged batteries), and then deactivating. Outside the city, the C-HR does not tilt too much to the side, it is stable and has a high roadholding. And, waiting for a complete test on alVolante, for now we can say that consumption looks good in relation to performance: in our test we averaged just over 15 km / l (according to the on-board computer).
A lot of security
The renewed Toyota C-HR is already orderable and is available in three versions: Trend, Style and Premiere of our test which, as standard, has 18-inch alloy wheels, headlights and LED lights, automatic parking system , the dual-zone “climate” and leather seats, in addition to lane keeping systems, blind corner monitoring and warning of the presence of obstacles in reverse, with automatic braking. Safety, however, is taken care of for all versions, with the standard Toyota Safety Sense package starting from the basic Trend: it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam and the camera for the recognition of road signs. The Toyota C-HR will be in the dealerships at the end of November, in the open weekends of 23/24 and 30 November / 1 December. Already planned promotions with substantial cuts in the list: the 2.0 Trend will pay 28.500 euros instead of 33.250, and the Premiere 32.500 euros instead of 37.250.
In our opinion
ADVANTAGES
> Easy driving. The calibration of the suspensions (neither too rigid nor too soft), the precise steering and the good road holding make the machine intuitive and less tiring.
> Engine. The hybrid 2.0 system with 184 HP overall is ready in response, fluid in power delivery and offers a vigorous thrust.
> Safety. The standard equipment is rich and includes the most modern driving assistance systems, with the standard Safety Sense package for the entire range.
DEFECTS
> Trunk. It is not very big, also because of the rather inclined rear window that steals space in height.
> Transmission. The E-CVT combined with the 2.0 is more fluid, but still rises a lot in revs, increasing the noise level, when all the engine power is requested.
> Back glasses. As in the previous version, they are very small: they limit visibility in reverse maneuvers and remove a lot of light from the interior.
