Sales boom for ethical solidarity pecorino: +20 percent

Coldiretti: «The agreement with the Biraghi dairy was awarded»

CAGLIARI. Sales of the ethical solidarity Pecorino Biraghi are flying, which in October has grown further, setting the monthly record, since it came on the market, with over 125 quintals sold, 20% more than in the same month of 2018. Born in March 2017, born in March 2017, thanks to an agreement between the Biraghi and Coldiretti Sardegna dairy, the ethical solidarity Pecorino guarantees a fair milk remuneration to the shepherds. It is a grated mixture of 70% pecorino and 30% Gran Biraghi (cow's cheese), 100% made in Italy. The agreement was signed at a time of full crisis in the dairy sector when the price of Roman Pecorino fell to 4.20 per kilo and the price of milk to 60 cents per liter, below production costs.

Biraghi signed with Coldiretti the first real chain agreement in the ethical-solidarity sector, with the purchase of pecorino from a cooperative at a price that would guarantee fair remuneration to the shepherds and never below production costs (6.20 euro / kg pecorino correspond to 0.85 cents / liter milk to the shepherd). And in fact, in 2017 he paid pecorino for 6.20 euros / kg, compared to 4.20 euros for the market. An agreement rewarded by the market: in October, just over two years after the signing of the agreement, sales had reached 31% of the weighted distribution in the Iper + Super channel, with presence in over 3400 points of sale throughout Italy. Thanks to this agreement, the Dorgali Shepherds Cooperative sells 1250 quintals of pecorino alla Biraghi (equal to 5 thousand forms) every year, guaranteeing a minimum price and therefore the opportunity for the cooperative and the shepherds to be able to plan.
