The snow that has fallen in these days and that expected from the weather forecast until Monday 18 November has created typically winter conditions, in a precocious manner, in the Lombard Alps.
Prealpino Geophysical Center forecasts give initially weak and scattered rains from Thursday 14 November, more and more intense in the night with possible snowfalls above 800/1000 meters, but at lower altitudes in colder places. Friday 15 will be covered with widespread rain at night and in the morning and snowfall up to 800 meters and locally even at lower altitudes, 400/500 meters. More rainfall in the evening and at night with snowfalls above 1000 meters, then going to a weekend with widespread rainfall, snowfalls at higher altitudes (over 1000/1300 meters) and slightly rising temperatures.
Based on available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which is responsible for activating the civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a notice of adverse weather conditions. The weather phenomena, impacting on the different areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities. Precipitation will be accompanied by heavy rain showers, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind. Gale winds are also forecast, with gusts of strong storms, from the southern quadrants over Lombardy and Veneto
Although the charm of the landscape encourages hiking, to appreciate its charm one must remember that the snowpack can present numerous problems, requires careful analysis and careful preparation of the excursions. To move safely in a winter environment you need the right equipment and adequate preparation, in particular you need to have and know how to use the Artva rescue devices, shovel and probe.
The recent snowfalls have been subjected to a rotation of the winds from the north and this has favored the increase of accumulations and slabs under the crests and ridges, as well as in canals and valleys. The snowpack is discontinuous and not very consolidated; therefore, accumulations and slabs of new formation, present at all exhibitions, can be detached spontaneously or give way to the passage of a single skier or hiker. The CNSAS recommends everyone to go to the mountains always with prudence and common sense.
