It is not a traditional plug-in hybrid, this is a high performance plug-ins. An example is the 150 km of autonomy, about three times more than any existing plug-in hybrid.
How is it outside
Although it shares some platform, some elements stylistic, the C-shaped taillights and the six-sided grill with the S90, the Polestar 1 has a distinctive personality. Its proportions are different, from GT coupe, and certainly help make it right away discernable.
Leaving the rear doors and shortening the S90 helps to refine the design language that has already done a lot of collecting success to Volvo. In addition, Polestar has also used carbon fiber exposed to reinforce the steel frame.

What's inside
The similarities with the S90 are more evident inside. Unlike Polestar 2, which uses a system of infotainment based on the most advanced Android, 1 borrows Volvo's Sensus touchscreen.
The nice thing is that it is one of the best infotainment systems available today; is easy to use, responsive and clean in the screens. Polestar also uses the same start button to turn on the car and some of the same dials and dials. Given the excellent work with interiors and technology, however, Polestar's copy and paste work is not at all out of place.
Driving pleasure
To the petrol engine 2.0 of the S90, Polestar adds a volumetric compressor and a new turbo, which works together with two electric motors that produce 85 kW of power. The total power of the system is 600 CV and 1000 Nm and the electric range is 150 km on the WLTP cycle.
West of Redwood City is a glorious, winding asphalt strip that extends through a redwood forest. For most hybrid cars it is a perfect road to visit the city. For Polestar 1, that same road is a playground that drives us to look for the limits of this PHEV. And of course we do it.
Turning to the combined mode reveals all the power of the Polestar 1. All four tires adhere to the road, (in this case 275/30 front and 295/30 rear) and keep the car stable, which counts on aexcellent progression thanks to an eight-speed automatic transmission very fast. From standstill, it starts from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds. It must be said, however, that all things considered, this machine does not seem extremely fast in a straight line; different speech for the curves, where it is enhanced.
Comfort
There is no obvious difference in the way this car behaves in electric mode compared to the hybrid one. Is always super comfortable, smooth and sweet even on 21-inch wheels and low-profile Pirelli P Zero tires.
The instantaneous torque pushes with consistency against the backrest, after a certain pressure on the "gas" pedal. Even the few kilometers of the city are covered in a almost absolute silence. The standard hybrid driving mode makes Polestar 1 behave not unlike a normal Volvo (in a good way). The transition between electric and gasoline is almost imperceptible and the journey is exceptionally regular, with only a slight sound from the gas engine entering the otherwise well-insulated cabin.
Curiosity
On the highway if you switch to Pure mode (completely electric), the petrol engine is switched off, eliminating its weak noises and the power passes only to the rear wheels.
A reading on the dashboard shows "125 km": clearly we have already used some of the 150 km of the Polestar 1 electric range in hybrid mode. It remains, however, more than enough to take us where we need to go and to conclude the test (another 68 km).
How much
At the moment Polestar 1 can be ordered in the USA, Canada, China and in several European countries, but not in Italy. In Germany it has a base price of 155,000 euros, excluded taxes. The only option for a fee is the matte paint from 5,000 euros. The closest competitor, the BMW i8, costs (still in Germany) 138,000 euros.
