GAZZETTA DI REGGIO The interview: I didn't want to become a character
After the Liberation he was appointed commander of the square of Correggio, avoiding attempts at summary justice on the fascist prisoners of the RSI, as was witnessed at the trial of Perugia in 1947. He also prevented, at the Correggio prison, an assault by the partisans: their goal was seven Republicans. Episodes like this confirm his reputation as a pioneer of national reconciliation. At 27 he was elected mayor of Correggio, a candidate by the PCI and also supported by three Christian Democratic councilors.
In 1947, however, he was arrested for the murder of Don Umberto Pessina, killed at the door of the rectory of the parish of San Martino Piccolo, a hamlet of Correggio. Accusations born of testimony later rejected or extorted under torture. In 1949 Nicolini was sentenced to 22 years in prison as principal of premeditated voluntary homicide: he served 10 thanks to the pardon for the former members of partisan formations. The revision of the trial took place only in recent years: he was definitively exonerated "for not having committed the act" in 1994 and was awarded a billionaire compensation for the unjust detention.
