The product in question is a gauze implant used to treat some common complications of childbirth, such as bladder prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. These implants have in many cases been found to be defective, causing infections and being very difficult to remove. Because of the implants they started to suffer from chronic pains and others were no longer able to have sex.
The implants were designed by Ethicon, a company owned by Johnson & Johnson, and widely promoted among surgeons and patients, claiming that implanting these gauzes was an easy and fast operation: in all, Johnson & Johnson sold more than 100 thousand installations of this type. According to Anna Katzmann, a federal court judge who issued the sentence, the company promoted these implants despite not having adequately tested them, even knowing the potential complications they could cause, and would have done nothing to remedy the damage once they she had heard of it. "They treated women essentially as guinea pigs, lied and did nothing to help them," said the judge, referring to Johnson & Johnson. "The risks were known, not insignificant, and due to the admission of the people heard, they could have caused significant and serious damage."
