Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has announced his resignation, following violent repression by the army of the demonstrations that have taken place in recent days in various cities in the country. Only on Thursday at least 44 people were killed by Iraqi security forces in Nassiriya and Najaf, where the army arrived on Wednesday to help the local police in handling protests that began in October against Abdul Mahdi's high unemployment rate and the corruption of the country's political class. Abdul Mahdi also justified his decision on the basis of the statements made by the Ayatollah Ali al Sistani, the highest religious authority in the country, who had harshly criticized the management of the protests by the prime minister and urged the parliament to discourage him.
