Le Bar-sur-Loup (France), Nov. 23 – Two people are missing, two others were injured and hundreds of houses were flooded on the Cote d'Azur, in the south of France, after heavy rains that caused vast floods. The two missing are a 77-year-old man and another person who fell into the water. In the two departments put on "red alert" by Meteo-France, Alpes-Maritimes and Var, the 1,600 mobilized firefighters received thousands of calls and carried out hundreds of interventions since yesterday. A 39-year-old woman was seriously injured after being swept away by a wave, the Munich fire department said. Even a 78-year-old man was hospitalized in a state of hypothermia, but without serious injuries, after being trapped by trees carried away by a flow of mud.
The authorities stressed in the evening, in view of the intensification of the rains and the already observed state of the rivers "which overflow in a very significant way", that "the floods will continue to deteriorate". They asked people "to remain safe in their homes, not to take their vehicles except in cases of force majeure" and "to exercise extreme caution near the waterways".Many roads are interrupted and the railway traffic is stopped also on the Côte d'Azur to the Italian border and it is expected that it will resume only tomorrow, according to the railways. The flights from the international airport of Nice, suspended during the day, resumed in the evening.
