A head to head Ryanair-Wizz Air in domestic and European flights, a match won by Turkish Airlines on intercontinental destinations. These were the most affordable airlines in Europe in 2018. In both markets – the so-called "short-medium" and "long" haul – the Lufthansa-Swiss-Austrian Airlines triad presented itself as the most expensive, reflecting even the fact that it serves basins (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) with greater spending power. This is what emerges from an analysis that the Corriere della Sera carried out on over three thousand pages of official budgets and non-public documents of carriers focusing on last year's average fare by calculating the average revenue per passenger.
The methodology
The study took into account the accounts of 17 airlines that together carried 656 million passengers, equal to two thirds of all those who in Europe embarked in 2018. In the financial statements, revenues from passenger traffic and net were considered of the extras. Customers and revenues were divided by type of service – national and European flights, intercontinental flights – and where possible by carrier so as to obtain an average value between Business, Premium Economy and Economy travelers. For IAG – British Airways holding company, Iberia, the «hybrid» carrier Aer Lingus and the low-cost Vueling and Level – an overall estimate can be made. While in foreign currency documents the conversion into euro was carried out by taking the average annual exchange rate. In the case of Air France-KLM (which also includes Transavia and Hop!) It is not easy to trace the data of the French side with certainty. While for the Nordic low-cost Norwegian Air there is no public break between short-medium and long-haul.
National and European flights
From the crossing of financial relations in 2018 for short and medium-haul flights it turns out that they are cheaper – obviously – the low cost flights: Ryanair with an average fare of 37 euros (one way) and the Hungarian Wizz Air with 39.5 euros. To these – it is good to remember – we should add the extras for services such as priority boarding or the choice of the place. In third place is easyJet with 56.1 euros. Among the "traditional" carriers, the convenience challenge sees Turkish Airlines (75 euros) charge slightly less than Alitalia (78 euros). Finnair, IAG, the Eurowings / Brussels Airlines combination, the KLM Dutch, the Lufthansa / Swiss / Austrian backhoe loader that belong to the same group as Eurowings / Brussels exceed the 100 euros.
On intercontinental flights
On intercontinental connections, the pricing strategy of Turkish Airlines is more evident, working on the management of transit flows in the Istanbul hub, offering lower fares than rival carriers. Strategy similar to that of Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad. For this – net of the Eurowings tandem (low-cost division of the Lufthansa group) and Brussels Airlines which saw an average ticket at 312 euros, but with a network that is not very widespread in the world – it is precisely the Turks who stand out with around 337 euros per way. Followed by Finnair (426 euros), Alitalia (almost 428), Klm (448) and holding Iag (just under 477). Also in this ranking Lufthansa / Swiss / Austrian Airlines sold tickets for 514.6 euros. It goes without saying that Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet do not appear as they do not have long-haul connections.
