There are three firefighters who died in the explosion that occurred in the night between Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November in Quargnento, in the province of Alexandria. The three police officers lost their lives trying to put out the fire. It is about Antonino Candido, 32 years old; Matteo Gastaldo, 47 years old; Marco Triches, 36 years old. The Head of the Fire Department has expressed "deep sympathy and closeness" to the families of the victims. There are also three wounded: two firefighters and a carabiniere.

The investigations of the Carabinieri to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the explosion, as it takes shape hypothesis of malicious origin of what happened (the first rumors speak of the discovery of triggers on the spot). According to what emerged from the first reconstructions, the Fire Brigade teams would have intervened just before 2 am in a building in Via San Francesco d'Assisi, partially collapsed due to an explosion.

The second explosion, the one that hit them, occurred while they were in one uninhabited farmhouse located a short distance away and used as a storage area for gas cylinders.

The tragedy occurred in a small town (just over a thousand inhabitants) in the plain surrounding Alexandria, on the border with Monferrato. There are many farmsteads present in the territory, including that of Quargnento.

"There was a small one explosion before midnight but I didn't take too much notice of it, "said a resident of the area. "Then I heard the Fire Brigade arrive. Shortly after midnight, there was a much stronger bang that woke us up ”.
