Giorgio Lattanzi, president of the Consulta: "The Constitution is a shield for the weakest, whether they are Italian or foreign"
The majority of the votes went to 69-year-old Stefano Petitti, president of the second civil section of the Cassation, who obtained more votes than the Advocate General Luigi Salvato. The Constitutional Court is composed of judges of different origins, five chosen by the President of the Republic, five elected by Parliament in joint session, three come from the Cassation, one from the Council of State and one from the Court of Accounts. From next December 3 Lattanzi will no longer participate in the Court's work for all new causes, since the law requires that the judging panel of a case can never change. The next president will be elected on December 11th.
For the first time in the history of the Consulta, the vote of colleagues should favor a woman, the Milanese constitutionalist Marta Cartabia, class of '63, appointed by the former President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano in September 2011, formerly vice-president of the Court since 2014, who will have before him a year of presidency. Cattolica, three children, a career as a jurist with an eye on international law and the evolution of European and overseas courts, has seen its name appear several times as a possible candidate for the presidency of the Republic and the role of premier. Last time, in August, with a note, he denied his possible candidacy, expressly saying that his goal was to finish his term in the building of the Consulta.
