Of the 24 teams admitted to the tournament, 16 are the ones that were best placed, per continent, at the World Cup last summer. The 6 teams of each group will be divided into 2 rounds of 3. The first 2 will go ahead and compete in crossed semifinals. The ideal for the Azzurri would be to avoid, in addition to Serbia, also Croatia, Lithuania and Canada since the cities that will host the four tournaments are Victoria (Canada) , Split (Croatia), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Belgrade (Serbia). Japan (host country), Spain, Argentina, France, Australia, USA, Nigeria and Iran have already qualified for the Games.
