Three people lost their lives and two others were wounded during the spectacular collapse of a road bridge in a city in eastern China, local authorities reported on Friday. The
disaster occurred Thursday night in Wuxi, east China's Jiangsu Province, about 100 kilometers northwest of
Shanghai.
Impressive videos posted online by Chinese media show a high bridge of several meters that flips to one side and crushes vehicles below. Other images show two fully compressed sedans, with only the hood or headlights still emerging from a huge block of gray concrete.
The investigation has begun
According to a preliminary investigation, an overloaded truck, which illegally borrowed the bridge, would have caused its collapse, reported the Wuxi City Hall on social networks. Three vehicles, including one unoccupied parked on the side, were crushed. Three people were killed in the other two cars, according to the town hall, which also reported two wounded.
The collapse of buildings, roads and other infrastructure is not uncommon in China. In February 2018, eight people were dead and three others missing in Foshan (south) after the collapse of a causeway, caused by a water leak on the site of a metro station.
