UFC: Chris Weidman bows to KO. first round technical challenge against Dominick Reyes

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was not spared in his light heavyweight debut on Friday.

He lost to KO. in the first round against Dominick Reyes in the final of a gala presented at TD Garden in Boston.

Reyes reached Weidman from the left in a counterattack and the latter collapsed to the ground immediately. Reyes only had to finish the job with a few hammerfists.

"That's all I dreamed of," said the winner in his first main fight. "I was honored to face Chris, he's an incredible fighter. Early in the fight, I saw the opening. I saw him come forward and I cracked his jaw. It only took a few more shots to finish. "

Weidman became champion by defeating Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in July 2013, but this victory never allowed him to propel his career as he would have liked.

He eventually lost his title by losing to Luke Rockhold in UFC 194. Since then he has won only one of his last five bouts – against Kelvin Gastelum.

Over the years, Weidman's chin became very fragile, and his shift to heavy duty was certainly not going to make his life easier.

"I apologize to all those who supported me for not winning. I'll be back stronger, "said Weidman after his defeat.

Reyes is perfect in five outings at the UFC and is seen as a good hope of the division, although several experts are cautiously optimistic. He won his previous duel against Volkan Oezdemir by split decision at UFC Fight Night 147.

In the semifinal, Yair Rodriguez (13-2) defeated Jeremy Stephens (28-16) by unanimous decision.

They found themselves after their dismissal last September at UFC Fight Night 159. The shock was stopped after only 15 seconds in the first round after Stephens had reached an eye by one finger of his opponent.

The highlight of the fight came in the second round, when Stephens was kicked to the body that hurt him tremendously. In pain, Stephens tripped and found himself in a vulnerable position. Rodriguez kept him on the ground by hammering him in the head, but he burned a lot of energy and his opponent miraculously managed to get back on his feet.

By pulling back by two rounds, Stephens knew he had to play all for the third time, without success.

Victory of Greg Hardy … for now

Greg Hardy signed a unanimous decision win (29-28 x 3) against Ben Sosoli.

Doubt persists, however, as Hardy, who suffers from asthma, used his inhaler before the third round. This is usually not allowed, but a commissioner would have given him permission to use it. Marc Ratner, head of legal authority in the UFC, said it was "totally against the rules".
