Compared to the "Nubian Queen". While the
Lebanese are descending this Saturday in the street for the third day of protest against the corruption of the political class, clashes between protesters and police are increasing. One of these altercations, filmed, became viral and symbolic of a whole claim: a Lebanese kicking in the family jewels of an armed ministerial guard.
The video was said to have been filmed in the night from Thursday to Friday, during a protest between demonstrators and the convoy of Education Minister Akram Chehayeb, in downtown Beirut, reports Lebanese media
Lorient the day. According to the media, one of the Minister's bodyguards got out of the car and shot in the air with an assault rifle, angering the protesters. While a second bodyguard in turn points his rifle in the air, the woman gives him the blow, making him back the surprised man.
"Our women do not just kick butts"
Very quickly, the video turned on social networks. The image was taken over by the Lebanese artist Rami Kanso and became the icon of this protest against corruption and tax increases. "When they steal your money, corrupt your country and point a machine gun at you, you kick them in the crotch," a Twitter user wrote. "Our women are not only kicking buttocks, they are also hitting gunmen," added another surfer.
Despite an intervention by the police with tear gas to disperse Friday night crowd in downtown Beirut in front of the government headquarters and dozens of arrests, protesters are mobilized again through the country this Saturday.
The most important popular mobilization since 2015
Protesters took to the streets Thursday night after the government's decision to tax calls made via Internet messaging apps like WhatsApp. A measure immediately canceled under the pressure of the street, but the Lebanese continued their movement to express their fed-up of a political class accused of affairism in a country with decaying infrastructure and where life is expensive.
This popular mobilization is the most important since the demonstrations against the power in 2015, during a crisis of waste management that still continues. Lebanon committed in April 2018 to reform in return for pledges of loans and grants totaling $ 11.6 billion. The public debt rises to more than 86 billion dollars, or more than 150% of GDP, the third highest rate in the world after Japan and Greece.
