The Giro d'Italia 2020 is finally born. Challenging, varied course, suitable for everyone, the one that awaits the riders who will compete in the Corsa Rosa next May. A lot of climbing, decisive fractions all over 200 km, a good number of time trial kilometers and several stages full of pitfalls. Next we analyze them, X-rays, one by one.

GIRO D’ORIA 2020 ROUTE TO X RAYS: ALL 21 STAGES

st stage Budapest – Budapest individual time trial of 8.6 km (Saturday 9 May 2020): Ready, go and the ranking men will already have their work cut out. The Giro starts with a not too short time trial where the last km and a half is all uphill. Expected detachments are lower than those given by Primoz Roglic on the San Luca this year, but still not very contained. A runner-climber like Nibali, for example, could also give about 30 ″ to a pure grimpeur like Carapaz.

nd stage Budapest – Gyor of 195 km (Sunday 10 May 2020): Space for fast wheels in the second Hungarian hamlet, which presents an extremely simple and poor pathway.

rd stage Szekesfehervar – Nagykanizsa of 204 km (Monday 11 May 2020): Another three-day event concludes with a nod to the pure sprinters. Very long, but totally flat.

th stage Monreale – Agrigento of 136 km (Tuesday 12 May 2020): No day off on return to Italy, but, indeed, a tortuous fraction with arrival at a tear of 3.7 km at 5.4% in which, in the past, Guido Carlesi, Moreno won Argentin, Bjarne Riis and Riccardo Riccò. It could be a tempting opportunity for Peter Sagan to put his first seal at the Giro d'Italia, even if the final warning, it must be said, could be a little too long for the Slovak player if he doesn't have the leg of the years gold.

th stage Enna – Etna (Piano Provenzana) of 150 km (Wednesday 13 May 2020): First arrival at high altitude of the Giro d'Italia 2020. Etna returns for the third time in the last four years, but with a completely new side, that of Piano Provenzana (17 km at 6, 9%). Will the volcano make the difference this time, after the 2017 stalemate and the few fireworks of 2018? True that on the fifth day it is usually early to see the runners make a real difference, but beware: the absence of the rest day between returning from Hungary and the ascent of the Boot could be felt in someone's legs.

th stage Catania – Villafranca Tirrena of 138 km (Thursday, May 14, 2020): The mysterious object of this Tour of Italy. Placed in the middle of the track of this stage there is the very long ascent of Portella Mandrazzi, but from the brow to the finish it will miss about 60 km. It is not, therefore, suitable for ranking men or even for sprinters. Space to what, probably, will be the first escape to go to the Corsa Rosa, then.

th stage Mileto – Camigliatello Silano of 223 km (Friday 15 May 2020): A very long fraction and without a meter of plain that, in the final, foresees the climb of the Valico di Montescuro (23.9 km at 5.7%), from whose brow to the finish 10 km will be missing. Second day of battle for the big names after Etna, probably.

th stage Castrovillari – Brindisi of 216 km (Saturday 16 May 2020): The sprinters will be back on stage at the start of the first weekend of the Corsa Rosa 2020, as this is a flat stage like a billiard table.

th stage Giovinazzo – Vieste of 198 km (Sunday 17 May 2020): Complete a first weekend for the fairly trivial truth a complex fraction in the central part, given the presence of Monte Sant’Angelo and Coppa Santa Tecla, but very simple in the last 30 km. Favorite sprinters endowed with bottom and good resilience in the short, like Caleb Ewan, but also Peter Sagan himself.

th stage San Salvo – Tortoreto Lido of 212 km (Tuesday 19 May 2020): Fraction sewn on the characteristics of the hinterland of central Italy. 4 short and steep walls in the last 30 km with the last one just 7 km from the finish line. Excellent track for ambush, especially in bad weather. We remember, on similar routes, the debates of Wiggins in Pescara at the Giro 2013 and of Froome on the Muri Fermani at the Tirreno-Adriatico of that same season.

th stage Porto Sant’Elpidio – Rimini of 182 km (Wednesday 20 May 2020): The sprinters on the Romagna Riviera are back on stage, in a stage with some pitfalls in the last 70 km, but nothing transcendental.

th stage Cesenatico – Cesenatico 205 km (Thursday 21 May 2020): Here we are at the hamlet that follows the path of the Granfondo Nove Colli. Nearly 10 climbs scattered along the track, which give life to a path that can vaguely remember that of a Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Space for escape, but in such a difficult stage something could happen even among the men of the standings.

th stage Cervia – Monselice of 190 km (Friday 22 May 2020): The climbs of Passo Rovello and Calaone, placed in the last 30 km, will complicate the life of some sprinters. Overall, however, it seems difficult, if not impossible, to avoid a sprint of a very large group.

stage Conegliano – Valdobbiadene individual time trial of 33, 7 km (Saturday, May 23, 2020): The trial against the longest time of this Tour of Italy presents an eventful track, inside which there is also the ascent of Ca del Poggio. It will be a time trial suitable for those riders who know how to push in the plains, but also uphill and downhill, like Tom Dumoulin, Primoz Roglic, Geraint Thomas, but also Vincenzo Nibali.

stage Rivolto – Piancavallo of 183 km (Sunday 24 May 2020): The final day of the second week is once again on the rise and the finish is placed on that Piancavallo which was conquered by Marco Pantani in 1998 and by Mikel Landa in 2017. Before the final warning, moreover, yes they will face Sella Chianzutan, Forcella di Monte Rest and Forcella di Palla Barzana.

th stage Udine – San Daniele del Friuli of 228 km (Tuesday, May 26, 2020): Here is the stage that follows the route of the Cup of the City of San Daniele, the race of the Italian elite-U23 calendar won this year by Giovanni Aleotti and last year by the new world champion Samuele Battistella. Very hard route with the climbs of Madonnina del Domm, Monte Spig, Monteaperta and Monte di Ragogna (to be faced three times in the last 70 km). However, here the ranking men could save themselves in view of the following days.

th stage Bassano del Grappa – Madonna di Campiglio of 202 km (Wednesday 27 May 2020): First of three hamlets over 200 km high mountain that characterize the third week. Forcella Valbona, Monte Bondone, Passo Durone and Madonna di Campiglio will face off. The final climb is pedaled, but the precedents of 1999 and 2015 tell us that the differences, however, can be made, especially if the runners will have in their legs as steep as those that they will have to climb before the final ascent.

th stage Pinzolo – 209 km Cancano Lakes (Thursday 28 May 2020): Departure uphill with Campo Carlo Magno, then the rise of Hofmandjoch and, finally, the pairing Stelvio – Laghi di Cancano. Fraction to say the least destructive where those who have will can make big differences.

th stage Morbegno – Asti of 251 km (Friday 29 May 2020): Quiet in the midst of the storm. The truce day ahead of the grand finale. Flat fraction that represents the last chance ever for fast wheels.

th stage Alba – Sestriere of 200 km (Saturday 30 May 2020): Last stop of the Giro d'Italia, which follows the direction traced by the other two present in the third week, or final on a pedaled ascent, preceded, however, by very hard climbs. Here they will face, in order, Colle dell'Agnello, Colle dell'Izoard, Montgenevre and Sestriere. Space also for attacks from afar, therefore.

stage Cernusco sul Naviglio – Milan individual time trial of 16.5 km (Sunday 31 May 2020): A stopwatch will close the Giro d'Italia in 2020, just like in 2019. Limited distance, but, in case of not particularly wide gaps between the first ones, there could still be battle between the ranking men .
