That the Kia brand has done strides in the last decade everything is known to everyone. Equally known is the variety of engines that the Koreans are able to give in their own range towards 2020. Not only the classic petrol or diesel thermal, but also hybrids with various levels of electrification and EV pure. In addition, the gas constant: a GPL highly appreciated by us in Italy, which is now also on the new Kia Sportage. Despite this wide diversification, a model of the most electrified in the range remains perhaps the least appreciated by the mass, who does not know it enough. It is about Niro, Crossover which has been on the market since 2016 but it was renewed this year.

Precisely taking advantage of the partial homonymy with the great Hollywood actor, Kia Niro currently approaches an exceptional testimonial that is Robert De Niro. But in substance? We tried the version hybrid HEV from 141 horses combined, with the light battery from only 38.5 Kg (1.56 kWh – 240V). The simple hybrid, which has no exaggerated performance or even the power outlet; does it all by itself, but it is not "only mild" like certain competition. Especially Asian hybrid competition, for Kia Niro 2019, but some other (European, only thermal) does not have all the convenience of the moment, thanks to incentives and rules. It is worth knowing this C-segment vehicle that tries to differentiate itself from the crowd under the dress, even if then the practical judgment passes from personal and economic variables.

Of Kia Niro we have already spoken several times on these pages (at this link the various articles and tests). Basically the 2019 edition is not far from the previous one. Only some visual details are refined, especially in the cut at end, front and rear vehicle. Bumpers in the lower part and headlights that have improved on both sides. A sense of greater modernity and above all characterization for lighting. Kia Niro 2019 remains 4.35 meters long and uses circles up to 18 'but it is a little more incisive, although less flashy than other crossovers. The later one with its almost vertical profile remains very evident and the whole denotes an image, however, far from certain European fashions.

Live: how it is inside

Kia Niro version 2019 improves its equipment and some finishes, trying like everyone to make perceive quality, even if the real obvious note remains that of spaciousness. An optimal Crossover for lower limbs and head, whatever height you have. Many plastic materials are visible, with only a few profiles and leather upholstery (in the top version) and the highlighting of certain glossy finishes that may please according to taste (given the ease of dirtying them). Generous in space, it does not exceed in luxury but there are all the functions that are needed today, easy to be enjoyed. Infotainment up to 10.25 inches with three-window menu, easy except destination change while navigation is already in progress. Graphics and controls are easy to scroll, plus Niro 2019 is the second Kia car that, in addition to connectivity (Vodafone SIM), has the dedicated App UVO Connect, to share some car information and send you some data (eg destination) remotely.

The central instrumentation with the 7 '' display and the rest of the controls on the left side, allow a good management (not easy as the Infotainment) of the driving aids. There are enough for the generalist "Plus" band of ADAS. Many notices, perhaps even a little invasive acoustically and above all many informative to understand the energy flow. Informative, because trying the classic hybrid does not need to do much indeed, you just have to choose how to dose the foot because the gearbox is managed automatically and the refill just as (on three levels). The trunk is from 436 to 1434 liters, not record without cutting down the seats given the dimensions, but compensated by the space in the passenger compartment, even for those sitting behind.

Hybrid guide

Finding a driving position on the Kia Niro is simple but not always immediate, due to the large space for those who like driving very "attached" may seem strange, leaving certain margins (the steering wheel is also manually adjusted in the top version). There are very few commands to use only if you always like to change the settings, otherwise everything is easy: the levers behind the steering wheel have various functions, especially the paddle they also allow you to manage the level of energy recovery, giving the strong regenerative braking to the pedal release. Kia Niro Hybrid is very simple to drive, to travel without weights. By the way: it weighs about 1500 kg in running order and moves lightly, this hybrid. It doesn't scare for the reachable speed, of only 120 (EV) or 164 Km / h, but satisfies its own target for the recovery (0-100 Km / h in eleven seconds). It satisfies without offering intense sensations, even with automatic transmission a double clutch six gears less bland than certain competition (which uses the CVT).

Rather than engaging in useless searches for sporting ambitions, those who are not accustomed will soon learn how to exploit the regenerative engine brake, seeing the graph and the flows (too bad the most exhaustive, both in the central display). All right, drive the hybrid at its best, because honestly, in thermal alone, you wouldn't even excel for consumption, while you can do better managing the electrical phases (zero emissions or not). The support of the approx 43CV from the synchronous motor (when there are all) it takes a lot to make the thrust pleasant, otherwise the 1.6 GDi petrol thermal would not be a lightning bolt of war with its 105 HP and 147 Nm, in fact. When it is in operation it also makes itself felt too much. We drove Kia Niro both in the city and on the highway, noting a certain one sonority from the four-cylinder engine placed at the front. The forte of the Niro is always in space, which also means comfort, given how you go quietly on the road with the adaptive Cruise that also works for the restarts and assistances (Level 2) that keep the lane in a firm manner, warning for: braking (even pedestrians and cyclists), blind angle detection and speed limits.

The two-zone climate is appreciable in this mid-season, as on many real rivals, but ventilation and even seat heating are not for everyone. As not all the generalists are the various USB sockets and the wireless charge, available to the devices of those who are traveling with the Niro 2019. Passing on uneven ground the level of assembly does not indicate problems, indeed, so good it highlights the noise of movement and of the engines.

At the end of our short test i consumption they have gradually decreased compared to the start-up theory: thanks to the "hybrid driving" starting from a base of 13 l / 100 Km in the center of Milan, we arrived close to seven, making about 90 Km in total, of which about twenty highway. Little to sentence, but with learning you won't get very far from 4.3 / 5.2 declared by the House in WLTP. In the case of driving at full performance, however experienced even if not the most suited to Niro Hybrid, it makes a "little tamarro" on the instrumentation to press the button of the sports dynamics. The steering wheel levers are used for changed management and the tachometer takes full space at the center of the dashboard, although it is superfluous counting that it is impossible to see the six thousand laps, even in Sport mode.

In summary

A crossover Interesting for his motor sport variations, Niro, su three levels of electrification. That totally EV (e-Niro) is being delivered in 2020 while the Plug-in already arouses interest but the biggest sales, to date, is making it the classic HEV hybrid that we liked enough. To be guided from the perspective of those who must move without looking for too many pleasures or strong sensations. Everything is easy here and friendly. In his first brief taste the 2019 Niro hybrid turns out to be a car that discreetly rewards those who want to travel with space, without excess performance or renunciation of content. Offering the opportunity to those who hang around the big cities to get the benefits of the hybrid. Unfortunately widespread advantages so not homogeneous, in Italy. As for the economic ones of purchase, honestly necessary given a gross price list not contained (from 26,250 euros but go up to have good facilities) the current non-homogeneous Italian legislation "rewards" some regions: up to € 3000 of benefits. Then there are the well-known national bonuses and promotions such as the Eco-Weeks Kia, which reduce Niro's price list bringing the range access close to the 20K net.

It remains to be seen how legislation and the market will evolve, that competition that will bring technological impulses. If the situation remains static on both fronts, this Kia car also benefits from an appreciation on the front flea, with a guarantee of seven years or 150 thousand Km. If instead technologies and privileges are upset by regulations, then it could become another matter. Now the Plug-in sister is available, with some benefits of performance in certain situations, but also greater mass (about 80 kg) and cost (about 10,000 euros on the price list, gross).
