Who reports pays a price. It happens to women who report abuse of a violent companion, it happens to those who choose not to remain silent, to the detriment of image and morality. This time to suffer the consequences of a conspiratorial attitude is an elementary teacher, suspended by the head teacher for having reported to the Police forces the abuses suffered by a student of just 6 years. It happened in Pavese last week and the news began to circulate quickly. Today we talk about it to shed light on those contradictions that animate our country every day, and in this case the school. Precisely that place that should be protected, the second home for many students who experience situations of great hardship in the family.

The facts

Several times the 6-year-old girl presented herself in a frightened class with obvious signs of violence on the body. The academic performance was going down and the child showed signs of isolation, sadness and fear. All this had not escaped the watchful eyes of the teacher, who had immediately reported the case to the head of the institute, without receiving concrete feedback. But faced with the umpteenth episode of alleged violence against the child, the teacher did not hesitate and decided independently to contact the police. The manager suspended her from teaching for a day. The reason? The teacher would have violated the "professional secrecy", that is, "he would have behaved in a way that did not conform to the responsibilities and duties inherent in the role", and caused image damage to the institution. The teacher turned to that point at the Court of Pavia, where Judge Donatella Oneto invited the new director to revoke the suspension and to return the failed salary to the teacher. The hearing was updated in December.

Because the teachers are not listened to

School is a second home, or so it should be. A safe place, entrusted with the task not only to educate our children, but also to raise and care for them. A space where mathematics, history and literature are joined by dialogue and listening. A space that is also a refuge for all those students who live in difficult situations at home. Where the family is lacking, it is in fact the school that assumes a "maternal" function, a caring role for the many children who do not find support elsewhere. But what happened in the Pavese puts us in front of a rampant attitude in our schools, where increasingly mistreated and discredited teachers are continuously de-legitimized. "A fact of unprecedented severity – said lawyer Luisa Flore of Uil, who is dealing with the appeal in court against the suspension -. A teacher who had only the instinct to protect a minor victim of violence in the family was mortified ".

Last update: "Teaching cannot be a trench work"

"Unfortunately this is not the first episode of the genre," commented Rino Di Meglio, national coordinator of the Teachers' Guild, recalling the story of Giuseppe Falsone, a professor in a high school in the province of Treviso, suspended by the head teacher for denouncing the father of a student who had attacked him. "Teaching cannot be a trench work, the teacher must enter the classroom with the serenity of someone who knows he is protected in the exercise of his function. Therefore the Guild proposes the establishment of the Superior Council of teaching: a body that, similarly to what happens with the Superior Council of the Magistracy, guarantees that the disciplinary sanctions are not used as improper weapons ".
