The desire to combine video games and sports activities goes back to Nintendo in the 80s and materialized for good with the release and popularization of the Wii. The Japanese publisher continues in this direction in 2019 with Ring Fit Adventure, a year after the Fitness Boxing attempt.
Trailer of Ring Fit Adventure
The Elder Sport
Ring Fit Adventure contextualizes sports activity and gamification in every sense of the word. Nintendo's game takes place in a heroic-fantasy universe threatened by Drago, a bodybuilder dragon with a marcel salient. As a hero, the player paces the regions of this colorful universe one level after another by running, jumping, moving in front of his screen … and repels the evil with the help of his companion "Ring" (the accessory provided with the game). This exergame (or active video game) manages to make you forget the time of a sweat that you are in the middle of a sport session and it works from the fire of god.
The scenario, pretext and childish, dresses the adventure perfectly and should appeal to little ones as well as to big children. Ring Fit Adventure will make you sweat in joy and good mood, but expect a challenge as you progress through the twenty or so worlds designed by Big N teams. The duration of the levels, the intensity of the exercises and their repetition provide a true sense of accomplishment and prove calorie to support the physical efforts made. Nintendo rewards players by enriching this sporting journey with new gameplay ideas, often well-known finds that the Japanese publisher has the secret.
This fantastic universe is accompanied by features inspired by RPGs. The hero faces many enemies and bosses in fitness fights that can test your physical abilities. Indeed, your attacks correspond to different exercises, 40 in number, select and perform perfectly to rain "criticism" on your opponents. Ring Fit Adventure pushes vice one step further by encouraging athletes to exploit the opponent's weaknesses according to their type represented by a color. This approach reminiscent of Pokemon adds a pinch of strategy during these phases of play which allows to dedicate a session to a specific part of the body. Nintendo really left nothing to chance.
To confront Draco and his henchmen, the hero is gaining momentum throughout the adventure. The latter learns new techniques, here exercises (arms, legs, body, yoga), gain experience and unlocking outfits to buy to increase his attack and defense statistics… which is essential to advance effectively. This exergame is based on the tactical approach by integrating the concept of smoothie, preparations to regain life and boost the power of attacks in combat. This requires ingredients to harvest at the mercy of levels full of collectibles to find to complete 100%. Ring Fit Adventure is made of RPG "sport" and does it with talent.
There will be sport
Be sure of one thing, Ring Fit Adventure is a pure and hard exergame no matter how colorful and role-playing it is. The title of Nintendo intends to make you sweat and succeeds in each session. The panel of exercises and mini-games available solicits the majority of muscles and puts your perseverance to work. Arms, legs, back, abdominal belt, sense of balance … you sharpen your body one after the other. Sports activities become more complex as you progress and reward the effort for more effort.
A coach guides you through the adventure and never fails to remind you of some basic principles starting with hydration, stretching and taking the time to recover … even if you interrupt a session. Nintendo takes care of his flock and it is pleasant, albeit a bit mater / paternalistic. We would sometimes like to live the experience without being interrupted too much. However, this constant monitoring reassures … the coach becoming over time a source of motivation and a faithful companion in the same way as Ring.
The health of the players matters and the publisher proves it by incorporating several essential functionalities for the video game sportsmen. Ring Fit Adventure allows you to measure your pulse after each level through the infrared camera located on the right Joy-Con. The game also calculates calories burned as well as all exercises performed in total and during the current session. For the more adventurous and motivated, Nintendo's exergame allows you to design your own workouts by combining the various unlocked exercises. It is then possible to work intensively a specific area of the body. This mode adjoins ideally in the main adventure without altering the fundamentals … namely fun and sports.
The notes
+Good points
- A motivating sport challenge …
- A colorful universe of heroic-fantasy …
- The RPG dimension (fighting, XP …)
- 40 exercises and other mini-games soliciting 99% of the body
- Creating personal workouts
- The coach and the health approach (measuring pulse and calories, warnings ..)
–Negative points
- … sometimes repetitive
- … to the childish (too) tone
Nintendo manages to merge sport and video game and invites players from around the world to sweat in front of their screen without even realizing it. With its RPG approach and colorful world, Ring Fit Adventure is an attractive invitation to the effort in a familiar setting, that of the video game. Athletes will certainly find fault, an exergame can not replace 100% intensive sports practice. Nevertheless, the richness of the proposed exercises and the universe of heroic-fantasy encourage nothing to let go and motivate more than ever budding athletes.
