The introduction of 5G mobile communication technology in Switzerland raises many concerns. Its opponents launched a popular initiative limiting the extension of the network. They have until April 15, 2021 to collect the necessary 100,000 signatures.
The Chancellery has given the green light to the federal initiative 'For a mobile phone respectful of health and energy efficient,' says Tuesday the Federal Gazette. The text requires that the limit values set by the Ordinance on Protection against Non-Ionizing Radiation not be raised, not even because of new measurement methods.
The service in mobile telephony and Internet would be separated between outside and inside space. Thus, the power of transmitters should be lowered so that emissions do not enter a building. Inside, the data would be transmitted by fiber optic cables or coaxial cables, and not by electromagnetic waves.
Reserved places in transport
Other measures include providing public transport with seats that prohibit the use of electronic devices. The premises of public buildings such as kindergartens, schools, hospitals or EMS should be designed to avoid any electromagnetic radiation.
Operators who plan to install new antennas or increase the power of existing antennas should obtain written approval from local residents within 400 meters. Electro-sensitive people would have free access to counseling centers.
Network being expanded
Despite the many oppositions against 5G, operators have begun to deploy their network for almost full coverage of Swiss territory. However, several French-speaking cantons have taken precautionary measures.
Geneva, Vaud and Jura have declared a moratorium pending the conclusions of a report by the Federal Office for the Environment on the issue. Friborg decided in early June to submit the implementation of antennas to the granting of a building permit. Neuchatel wants to apply the precautionary principle, as for the Grand Council Valais, he refused to introduce a moratorium.
