Italian bargoers are going to have to use their noodles to suck down their drinks — some bars are using straws made out of pasta, according to a recent Reddit post.
“Here in Italy bars are starting to use pasta as straws to reduce plastic use,” according to the post. “Our technology amazes the world another time.”
A London-based company called Stroodles claims users can “drink easy” and be environmentally responsible by using the flavorless and biodegradable bucatini-like pasta in cold drinks.
They’re also vegan and can be easily resized to fit any drink, although they’re not recommended for hot beverages, according to the company.
“We want to inspire the world and show how easy it is to do good — with just one Stroodle at a time,” its website reads. “With Stroodles, you don’t have to change behaviors and compromise on your drinking experience.”
A box of 12 straws is available for just over $4, while 100 straws will set you back $15.85.
Stroodles will decompose overnight after use “without any extra action” — far shorter than the average breakdown for a paper straw, which can take up to 60 days, according to a company spokesman.
“As with any straw, it is not recommended to drink hot beverages with it, as it might cause probable injury like tongue burn,” the spokesman told Metro in August. “Stroodles are recommended for use with cold drinks, unless you want to make a noodle soup.”
The straw debate took on a new shape last year when McDonald’s eliminated plastic straws in its restaurants in the UK and Ireland. But the straws were not able to be recycled and had to be tossed out with general trash, according to an internal memo.
A total of 500 million plastic straws, meanwhile, are used in the United States every day, according to Eco-Cycle, one of the country’s largest nonprofit recyclers.
