Switzerland's four largest publishers are encouraging the use of an optional login for access to online editions of more than 20 German-language newspapers. CH Media, NZZ, Ringier and Tamedia will extend this campaign to French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino in 2020.

Users are invited to register voluntarily when viewing online offers from digital alliance partners, the four publishers said in a joint statement Tuesday. The login will become mandatory in September 2020, says Christoph Tonini, CEO of Tamedia.
The main interest of the login is obtaining more personalized content. The higher the number of users with login, the more the publishers will be able to offer specific articles, information, videos and contributions to target groups and offer them to interested readers, explain the publishers.
Among the twenty or so German newspapers concerned are NZZ, NZZ am Sonntag, Blick, Bilanz, Tages-Anzeiger, Basler Zeitung, Berner Zeitung, Bund and 20 Minuten. The Swiss Digital Alliance was formed in 2018. It includes CH Media, NZZ, Ringier, Tamedia and the SSR.
