The chairman and chief executive of Japanese electricity company Kansai Electric Power announced Wednesday their resignation due to a scandal over lavish gifts received for years from a local elected official.

"To assume our responsibility, we decided to resign," Makoto Yagi group president said at a press conference. He had ruled out this possibility a week ago, but since the scandal has grown and critics have not stopped rocketing. "My resignation is effective today but that of the Director General, Shigeki Iwane, will be later" after the end of an investigation by an external body, said Makoto Yagi.

"We apologize," he said, bowing to the cameras.
"We decided to set up a new independent commission of inquiry," Shigeki Iwane said, assuring that this body would have full discretion to investigate the bad practices rooted in the company and recently unearthed.

2.7 million euros of bribes

The leaders of Kansai Electric Power (Kepco), which serves western Japan, had recognized nearly two weeks ago receiving for years "valuable" gifts (money and objects) from the deputy mayor of Takahama, a town hosting one of the largest nuclear power plants of the group.

The amount of these disguised bribes, paid to twenty officials of Kepco for seven years until 2017, totals 320 million yen (2.94 million francs).
"I will not give details on who received what, when and for what value, because it is about private information," said Shigeki Iwane, raising a volley of criticism in public opinion.

"We accepted these gifts because we feared that a refusal would deteriorate our relations with the administration," he had justified. "We had in mind to make them at the right time. We knew these were expensive presents and should be returned one day, "he said.

Kepco is the Japanese company whose electricity generation was most dependent on nuclear power before the Fukushima disaster in 2011, which gradually led to the shutdown of all facilities and a drastic tightening of nuclear safety standards in the country. .
